Gran Paradiso National Park, 4-7 September, 2018
From the 4th to the 7th September 2018 researchers, whose affiliations are part of EcoPotential project, gathered in Noasca (Gran Paradiso National Park – Italy) to attend EODESM Training Course.
EODESM is an open source system that can use any remote sensing or other spatial datasets at any scale to generate highly detailed and relevant classifications for protected areas and surrounds. The course has been held by Professor Richard Lucas (from the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, Aberystwyth University, United Kingdom). During this four days course, attendees had the opportunity to learn how to use EODESM system and Virtual Lab through hands-on training; moreover they were shown how to use EODESM mobile app in the field and particular care was taken in the detection of local and broad land cover changes.
At the end of the course, researchers were satisfied and they mainly appreciate the use of EODESM app, recognizing that it could be a powerful tool to reduce errors in field records transfer and to have standardized land cover classification throughout all protected areas involved in Ecopotential project. In long-term perspective, the everyday use of EODESM system and application could lead to have a punctual, detailed and real time classification and monitoring of land cover and its changes.
All in all EODESM Training Course has been the occasion to gather researchers from different background and expertise, to discuss which are the operator needs in the field and the next steps for EODESM.
